“The idea of Crop for the Shop is that they can take their surplus to their local shop, sell it for 70% of the retail value and be safe in the knowledge that they are not only helping feed their local community and economy, but they are helping their local shops survive.
“Since launching Bigbarn 12 years ago, the fundamental aim has always been to support farmers, producers and local shops and encourage more people to use them. Crop for the Shop takes that idea one step further by making people suppliers to the shops, as well as consumers. It’s a wonderful way to reconnect people with the food they are eating and where it comes from.”
Nikki Pollock of Ardross Farm Shop, one of the 100+ retailers that are involved, said, “We’ve been doing Crop for the Shop for a while now. A customer asked if we would be interested ain some surplus crops and we said yes. It’s gradually gained momentum and now lots of local people sell us their surplus produce, such as discovery apples, chillies, fennel and lettuce.”
