Top Tips For British Food Fortnight

23 September 2008, 18:15 PM
  • Running until 5th October, the seventh edition of British Food Fortnight is the biggest national celebration of the diverse and delicious range of food that Britain produces. In the past, retail promotions have proved that the event has a serious impact on sales, so here are some tips from the organisers on how to take part in this year's event:

Increase your stock of British food
- Look at your existing stock. Is any of it British? You may be surprised by how much local food and drink you already sell, but are not promoting as such.

Highlight British food in-store
- Don’t just assume your customers know you stock British products. Use British Food Fortnight as an opportunity to shout about.
- Use POS material with the British Food Fortnight logo or a Union Jack.
- Create a display of British food and drink in your shop window or on a table positioned in a prominent place, so that customers can see the products available when they walk in. A display is a useful draw for the media as it creates a talking point and is easily photographed.

Offer tastings to promote British food
- Run an in-store promotion or tasting. This could be a sampling of new or existing products in your shop.
- Invite producers for in-store demonstrations.

Retailers are also invited to work with their local schools during British Food Fortnight to help teach children about the pleasures and health benefits of eating fresh, seasonal and regionally-distinct produce. Retailers wanting to participate can host a class visit in their shops; offer to give a talk at assembly on how to make healthy snacks; help set up a fresh food tick shop in their local school; run a competition for children in-store; or donate ingredients for school cookery lessons.
