Tesco Sparks Supermarket Price War

  • Food giant Tesco has started a supermarket value war by cutting the price of around 3000 products by up to 30%

UK boss Richard Brasher announced plans to put £500m into cuts of everyday foodstuffs such as vegetables, pasta and dairy – the supermarket’s biggest price shake-up in two decades.

“Across the country families are telling us the same thing - their budgets are under real pressure,” says Mr Brasher. “They want more help today to afford everyday essentials. We have listened carefully and for families facing hard times and looking for genuine savings, The Big Price Drop will cut prices on the products they need to buy the most.

“We’re giving customers a more straightforward shop - reducing the number of promotions and putting the emphasis on clear and reliable savings that everyone can benefit from,” he added.
This news comes just a few days after Sainsbury’s replaced its ‘Try Something New Today’ strapline with ‘Live Well for Less’, in a bid to dispel the idea that the store is more expensive than its competitors.

Mike Coupe, Sainsbury’s group commercial director, says, “Sainsbury’s Live Well for Less marks a huge step forward in how we deliver to our customers. We know that budgets are under more and more pressure but people still want to have the quality products and goods that they can trust.

“Live Well for Less will drive everything we do. We are not resting on our laurels, we are ensuring that we will help customers to enjoy competitive prices, without compromising on quality or values,” he adds.

Earlier this year Asda also launched a ‘price war’ scheme which aimed to guarantee its products were 10% cheaper than rivals.
