Get your free copyProject Ocean runs from 11th May to 12th June and will see the London store giving itself over to leading international marine protection campaigners, as well high profile activists from the worlds of art, fashion, culinary arts and entertainment.
The store’s historic food halls and restaurants have committed to serving only sustainably sourced fish products – and will provide customers with guidance on fish consumption.
“Marine conservation is a personal passion for me. Project Ocean has created a wonderful opportunity to use Selfridges’ own unique channels to help conservationists reach a wider audience and raise the stakes for global impact,” comments Alannah Weston, co-creator of Project Ocean and creative director of Selfridges.
“We hope our increasingly eco -engaged customers will be inspired by the project and make sustainability a part of their everyday lives. Our hope is that 100 years from now, people will be still be able to enjoy the wonders of the ocean and that Selfridges will still be able to sell fish in our stores,” she adds.
Selfridges has been developing the project for the past year in partnership with organisations and charities including the Zoological Society of London and the Marine Conservation Society.
The event will culminate with the GLOBE World Ocean’s Day summit on 8th June, the United Nations-recognised global day of celebration of our oceans. Held for the first time in a non-traditional, public location, it will bring heads of state, ambassadors, dignitaries and MPs together with NGOs and activist organisations to examine and revise The Common Fisheries Policy amongst others.
