Javier Asensio, owner of Fincalink.com, said, “Much of the oil available in the UK is of a poorer standard and is a blend of oils, where there is no requirement from the supplier to state all the countries of origin that go into the final products. This must change – suppliers should have an obligation to olive oil farmers to state where the oil they are selling is produced.
“We increasingly want to know where our food is farmed, who farms it and how ethical the process of production is. Labelling is our first port of call but it’s clear that this information is too often unreliable – but it’s as applicable to processed food as it is to an increasingly British staple, olive oil. To seek the real deal, whatever the food, you have to go direct to the source.”
