Over 100 have signed up to the association’s Wall of Fame, which lists the companies which have promised to only source pork from farms compliant with the EU sow stall ban.

Currently, more than 60% of EU countries are failing to comply with new animal welfare rules, with pregnant sows still being kept in narrow cages.

Dr Zoe Davies, general manager for the NPA, said, “It is clear from the responses we have had that these companies have taken our challenge very seriously and on behalf of British consumers we thank them from their responsible stance.”

Richard Longthorp, chairman of the NPA, added, “British consumers can be confident that most of the pork and pork products on British supermarket shelves is traceable and is produced to the high welfare standards they expect.

“British pig farmers have, of course, exceeded European welfare requirements for many years, and British pork is traceable back to its farm of origin.”
