The award was presented to owners Sue and Anthony Johns at the Farm Shop & Deli Show on Monday 20th April, held at the NEC, Birmingham.
Nigel Barden, chair of judges said, “Johns of Instow & Appledore are integral to their North Devon communities and a real jewel of a find to those travelling from further afield. They are brilliant examples of a local shop, offering a complete one-stop offer. Johns provide a friendly, well-informed service, with a marvellous array of, wherever possible, locally sourced ingredients. It’s the type of business that others should strive to be like.”
Elaine Lemm, co-chair of judges said, “Without doubt, choosing an overall winner from the outstanding 2015 Awards line-up was all but impossible. Ultimately, the choice was not just for a worthy winner but an enterprise that embodies the excellence of farm shops and delis in the UK today. The unanimous agreement of the judges demonstrates that Johns of Instow & Appledore is that business and justly deserves the accolade of Retailer of the Year.”
Customer comments were also considered during the judging process, and included:
“Quality local foods supporting local industry. Good atmosphere and delightful staff that make a wonderful eating experience.”
“It’s such a pleasure to shop at Johns. Everyone who comes to stay with us takes a range of products back with them and for my father in law to admit that it’s the best meat he has tasted is a first! The quality of the food is high as is the customer service. It’s our equivalent to Fortnum & Masons.”
The team at Johns of Instow & Appledore said, “We are absolutely delighted, it’s not sunk in yet! We’re so proud of everybody, thank you to our loyal customers and dedicated team. It is all of them who have made this possible. One of our core strengths is being able to bring so much local produce to customers whilst supporting local producers. This award is not just for our customers and team, but also in recognition of our local suppliers.”
