Defra: More Detailed Meat Labelling?

14 May 2015, 10:17 AM
  • The government is in discussions with the food industry regarding making the labelling on meat more detailed

Currently, all meat produced in the UK is labelled ‘Born, Raised and Slaughtered in Britain’, but under the possible new guidelines the specific country the meat originated from will be made clear.

If this idea comes into practice, the labelling will read along the lines of ‘Born, Raised and Slaughtered in England/Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland’.

A DEFRA spokesperson said, “Consumers have a right to know where their food comes from and we have already made real improvements in this area, for example, poultry, beef, lamb and pork from the UK are clearly labelled as British.

“We are pushing for food manufacturers to give as much information on the origin of meat ingredients in their products, provided it does not mislead consumers and does not put a disproportionate burden on food businesses.”

Labelling dairy products with ‘Made from British Milk’ is also being considered for products including cheese and yoghurt.
