In 2009, people around the world will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns’ birth on the 25th January, and no Burns Supper would be complete without the traditional cheese and oatcakes to round off the night, along with a wee dram of course!
The perfect cheese is Dunlop cheese; which was originally made near Burns’ home in Ayrshire in the 17th century and is still produced to a traditional recipe today at Torrylinn Creamery on the Isle of Arran. Matured for up to 12 months, this cheese is characteristically mild, sweet and buttery-tasting cheese and although similar to many cheddars is much smoother and creamier.
Only ever made on Arran, the Burns Truckle is created, not just by the people who make it – a highly skilled team of artisan cheesemakers, the dairy cows who convert the island’s prolific grasslands into rich Arran milk.
