  • After lobbying since 2007, The Wensleydale Creamery has won its case to gain Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status
Wensleydale Acquires PGI Status

The creamery’s win means that similar cheese made outside of the Yorkshire region of Wensleydale cannot be named Yorkshire Wensleydale.

The accreditation was awarded due to the creamery’s multi-award wins and focus on quality, provenance and authenticity.

As a result, consumers can be confident that they are buying a cheese that has been hand-crafted using traditional methods, within its region of origin.

“Receiving PGI status for our Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese is a huge achievement which we can all be incredibly proud of. We’re hoping to keep building on this superb start to the year by introducing the PGI logo to our packaging, to help consumers differentiate between our authentic Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese and other Wensleydale cheeses on the market that are not made in the area.

“2014 also promises to be an exciting year for both The Creamery and other local food producers in the region, with the Tour de France’s Le Grand Depart visiting the Yorkshire Dales. This offers us the chance to showcase some of the wonderful local produce made in the Dales, putting the Yorkshire Dales on the World map and encouraging more visitors to explore the area.”
