Tim Eales, strategic insight director of IRI said, “Our data shows that, compared to 2012, we are buying less frozen sausages. This may not be a surprise, as the sausage took an unnecessary knock during the horsemeat scandal. In fact, no horsemeat was ever found in a single sausage. But, the UK reacted to the crisis by shunning the British banger and sales were hit heavy, with a volume sales drop of 22% for Frozen Sausages during the crisis. This is equivalent to 1.2 million packs in 12 weeks or 100,000 packs per week. Since then we have seen consumers paying more for their frozen sausages as they trade up to higher quality products. There is good news for prepacked sausages, up by 6.9% on last year, as providers have strongly emphasized the freshness, quality and origin of ingredients to the UK consumer.”
