  • With high street sales suffering peaks at troughs, it seems the draw of the internet continues unabated as a new report reveal sales are exceeding £4bn a month.

The wet weather, which had such an effect on sales in retail outlets during July, has meant more shoppers have gone online to buy their goods and last month a whopping £4.2bn was spent by British consumers. The figures are up 80% last year.

The study, conducted by Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) revealed sales in clothing, footwear and accessories have also increased and online spending was helped by retailers launching new websites, or updating existing ones.

Jo Evans, managing director of IMRG, said, “This data reveals the extent to which the retail sector is being transformed by frictionless e-commerce.

“Major brands are bringing on-steam the next generation of slick new internet retailing services and consumers are flocking to use them.”
