  • Although most independents pride themselves on offering personal service, almost 50% of customers cite 'pushy sales assistants' as the worst part of the shopping experience

Indeed, overly-enthusiastic service has topped a recent survey of the most annoying aspects of shopping on the high street.

The study, taken by discount website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, found that many shoppers are also put off by crowds (44%), messy stock (39%), sales (36%) and the in-store temperature being too hot or cold (19%).

The respondents who chose ‘pushy sales assistants’ as one of their chief gripes were asked to explain why; the majority (61%) said they felt ‘pressured into buying’, while 27% explained they ‘preferred to be left alone completely’.

“The high-street shopping experience is something that we all have experience of and with this research we wanted to look into what aspects tend to irritate people the most,” Mark Pearson, chairman of the company.

“It seems that pushy sales assistants were the top bug bear – something that isn’t too surprising given how frustrating it can be when you don’t feel in control of your own purchase decisions.”

“There will inevitably be aspects about all types of retail that get on peoples’ wick, and little can be done to please everybody. High street stores should simply ensure that their outlet is tidy, welcoming and efficient when it comes to customer service. After all, while helping the customer is important, no one wants to feel like they’re being pressured into buying,” adds Mr Pearson.
