  • The cost of food staples such as bread, eggs, milk and butter has risen by 20% compared with a year ago, claims grocery comparison website MySupermarket.co.uk.

Its basket is based on 24 items and portion sizes for a family of four. Most of the items are own label.

As a result of the increase, a family spending £100 on their weekly shop would be forking out an extra £1,040 a year, says MySupermarket.co.uk. “Once again we’re seeing increases in the price of the average family’s food basket, in particular wheat and dairy based products,” said Johnny Stern, director of MySupermarket.co.uk.
