Organic Superstore Buys Land

  • Unicorn Grocery is currently interviewing farmers and growers willing to cultivate the 21 acres to supply the store.

The shop, which is a workers’ co-operative in Chorlton, currently sells a significant amount of regional produce, but has tried to secure an even larger supply of local organic produce for a long time. “We sell the freshest, most affordable produce around and year on-year-have increased our regional supply of organic food,” explains Unicorn worker, Rob Alderson. “To feed a city in a sustainable way we need more growing land near the shops that sell the food – it’s simple.  We decided to secure land in our locality so that we can have a secure supply of organic veg for the long term.

“After 12 years of successful trading and working closely with farmers we are in a great position to go ahead with this project. We know what produce the shop needs and our customers value greatly the benefits of a local, fresh, affordable supply.”

The Glazebury plot was purchased after Unicorn raised £200,000 in Loanstock. The new land means it will take only 30 minutes for the produce to reach the store – a 14 mile trip. Anyone interested in a growing position should get in touch with the shop via email, stuart@unicorn-grocery.co.uk.
