Get your free copyThe research showed that middle aged subjects who ate more protein than the others taking part in the study died sooner as a result of ageing of their bodies’ cells. It has also suggested that those who consume high levels of protein are over four times more likely to be killed by cancer.
The study recommends that men and women between fifty and sixty years of age cut down on their intake on cheese, meat and eggs, and obtain their protein from fish and lentils instead.
Experts have advised that the best way to maintain a healthy diet is to encourage moderation – something which most consumers partake in, according to Justin Tunstall, owner of Town Mill Cheesemonger in Lyme Regis. He said, “I don’t think this will affect independent retailers, as our customers tend to be pretty discerning in what they eat and are more likely to partake in a balanced diet.
“As they have a real interest in food, they’re likely to understand such matters. We’ve always advocated eating moderate amounts of good, interesting, tasty cheese rather than a huge great chunk of soapy, supermarket cheddar.”
