  • An outbreak of salmonella which affected some 50 people has been traced to cooked ham sold by a chain of independent butchers, but the supplier has yet to be traced

The outbreak was first detected in North Wales in mid-July but has since shown up in areas of England from the Thames Valley to Cumbria.

Salmonella, which is often caused by eating contaminated or undercooked food,  has at the time of writing affected 57 consumers aged between seven months and 87 years and several people who ate the ham have required hospital treatment.

Vendors of ham are being urged to observe hygiene protocols, and to ensure hands are properly washed and towels are not shared.
