Although Britain produces more varieties of cheese per member of the population than any other country, its consumers eat 11.6 kilograms each a year.
Justin Tunstall of Town Mill Cheesemonger said, “What we need to remember is that in the top ten cheese-consuming countries of the world, cheese forms a large part of the diet anyway. For example, in some countries in Europe cheese is eaten in large quantities for breakfast, whereas we wouldn’t dream of doing that in Britain.
“We eat a lot of meat in this country, which excuses this a little, but I think the great sorrow is that people don’t realise what a vibrant array of different cheeses we have in this country and that we produce more cheeses than France. Viewing cheese more of a central part of some meals rather than just as a bolt-on at the end would certainly help.”
