Get your free copyThe findings identify a growing concern among Brits regarding the amount of packaging used by grocery brands. The study by discount website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk found that 72% of people asked were ‘concerned’ by the amount of packaging used by many food companies, while 63% stated they would like brands to make a marked effort to reduce the amount of packaging they use.
“This is quite the hot topic of conversation at the moment, especially given nationwide council plans to reduce the frequency of waste collections in towns,” says Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk. “Companies really need to realise that consumers have become more and more aware of what they can do to reduce their own environmental impact, and as shown by the results in this study, many have recognised the problems caused by excess packaging on produce,” he continues.
Over half, 53%, of all people who took part in the study said they believed using excess packaging on produce was ‘irresponsible’ of companies, while a quarter admitted to having stopped buying grocery brands that use excessive packaging.
“Although packaging is a key tool in the successful marketing of a product, it would be worth noting that brands who visibly reduce theirs could become more appealing to the buyer; over those who use too much in making the product look attractive. It is these brands who will be chosen by the environmentally conscious; and as this studies proves, these people are vastly becoming the majority,” he adds.
