5 Minutes With: Steven Van Middelem

What would you be doing if you weren’t in the food industry?
In a different life I would probably be focused on looking into new ways, processes or products to create more natural options for people. Or perhaps be involved in non-conventional biodynamic farming.

What was your first job?
My first real paid job was when I was 16 and working at an established bistro/restaurant. I lost 22lb in weight in one month from all the running around and serving tables.

What inspires you?
It can be any action, small or big. But if I see people who transcend the so-called limitations in life or are passionately driven to change the status-quo, this definitely gives me a spark.

What’s the worst job you’ve done?
After university in Belgium, I moved to San Francisco to work in private equity and the industrial tech sector. This was a great experience but in hindsight, not my thing.

What’s your favourite part of your job?
I love the entire process from idea to consumption. It’s about creating, manifesting and delivering an actual product which has a positive impact and genuine value to peoples’ lives.

And your least favourite?
If there is something I don’t like I still try to find the joy and grace in it. However, if I can delegate any tasks relating to administration, I’ll be happy to do so.

How about the food industry?
The last decade has seen many wonderful disruptions and alternatives in the industry, from plant-based and dairy-free to functional ingredients. Today we have a great responsibility towards the next generation. If we continue as we are, we have an estimated 60 years of farmable soil left on the planet. Today’s fruits and vegetables already contain 90% fewer nutrients. Lack of organic soil content will eventually lead to serious challenges. It’s great to see the many wide-ranging initiatives. We founded PLANET FHIRST, donating 1% of our turnover to restoring biodiversity together with SUGi. Just like our gut microbiome, the living content of our soil determines the nutritional content of our food and overall health of every species.

What would be your last supper?
Definitely fresh produce from the garden. There’s nothing better than vibrant, fresh food.

What’s your motto?
There are a couple which all come down to our FHIRST’s company motto “choose life”. Most of us are all so tied up in our daily activities and problems that we forget to live. It’s our ‘FHIRST for life’ where we celebrate the small acts and moments that enhance our lives.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
I’ve travelled to many places over the years, so I’ve probably eaten some funky ingredients or ‘unknown’ species. Luckily it hasn’t left a mark or trauma so far.

What’s your favourite book?
If I had to choose just one, it would probably be the Autobiography of a Yogi, of which I bought an extra dozen to hand out to friends and family for inspiration.

Sweet or savoury?
Both!
